Following the success of several small air shows conducted by a local flying club, the Australian Bicentennial Authority commissioned the club to organise an air show to celebrate the Australian Bicentennial in 1988.

The result was The Australian Bicentennial Air Show, held in October 1988, the largest air show ever conducted in the Southern Hemisphere.

The success of that show became the basis for the biennial Australian International Air Shows, now held at Avalon Airport in Victoria.
